At 10:05 I got the following e-mail review of the night from my classically trained, professional singing mom: "MICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAELMICHAEL".
I would tell you what she said when I called her (like I usually do after each Idol when the show gets really serious) but she, like Kara, was crying.
So, moving on from Michael . . . . Casey was nice. I thought he sounded like Bob Seger at times and while I agree that there was no "wow" moment it was a solid, professional, authentic performance.
The night had two HUGE surprises. The guys I thought were gone came up big - Tim and Todrick. Not only were their performances surprisingly good given their track records but shockingly good given the songs they chose. Hallelujah and Somebody to Love had Titannic written all over them but may turn out to be their life rafts. So does that totally hose up the voting? You have to love the irony that Vote for the Worst got behind Tim this week and he was one of the best!
The rest: Lee (Fireflies) and Alex (Trouble) should have switched songs. Look it's not just me regarding Lee. My youngest daughter Cassandra said, "If he wasn't so flat, it would sound OK." And the judges finally got on him about pitch problems. Alex's lack of performance confidence is killing his natural ability. Andrew's Genie was clever but vocally uninspired and off the beat. Aaron took on too big a song and was pitchy, too.
Given the cuteness factor that seems to work on Idol more in favor for the guys than girls, it is way too hard for me to predict who stays or gos now given how well Tim and Todrick did tonight. Todrick, in particular, has a great voice which the judges have pointed out each week. And he is an engaging stage performer. His potential is great and tonight we finally got a glimpse of it. Obviously, Mike and Casey are safe. I am invested in Todrick's raw talent and potential. Beyond that, I am feeling I can live with any of the other guys being gone. Despite each one having a unique style, they all seem to blend in together as "a-ight". Nothing special.
What I am excited about though - assuming no unforeseen shocks - is that we have ourselves a real show now! Big Mike and Crystal each with very different styles. Lilly, Siobahn and Casey right there in the mix. And frankly, whoever is left after them isn't so bad, either - well, sorry, I do have issues with Lee. We have much to look forward too.

Who should go? You are right, there were some surprises. Tim amazed, Todrick may very well have saved himself, Casey reminded us why we really, really like him and Big Mike delivered Big time! There weren't any real train wrecks that the ladies in Nebraska could agree on. One thinks Alex could go any time and the other thinks he is adorable in an innocent sort of way. (and the one who doesn't find that captivating thinks the other will agree when, in the future, her "adorable" teenage son and his "adorable" friends try to use their charm against her)So who should go?
Who should go? Unanimous decision: Kara! Kara, the newlywed, who, week after week hits on Simon, channels Paula and is just utterly embarrassing! The fake crying, complete with dinosaur tears, who really only wanted to touch Simon's chest, Kara. You know why we don't miss Paula? Because Kara has become Paula.
Please, Simon, when you leave next season, take Kara with you!
I can only agree with you.
And this will be a really good, entertaining touring group this year, rife with diverse styles.
I finally felt a connection to Big Mike last night...he was fantastic, and if a guy were to win this season, he is now the frontrunner, IMO. The only other guy I feel invested in is Alex Lambert...I absolutely love the tone of his voice. But he has no stage presence at this point and still looks terrified! I truly feel he has something to offer that's worth waiting for, but I don't know that he has enough time to develop and grow during the Idol run. Poor Aaron had a rough night, as did Andrew. I was shocked by Tim Urban's performance, only because I was expecting nothing and got something! Todrick did well and I think he'll be back next week. Casey gave a very sincere performance, and I just can't watch Lee without thinking he's a very mediocre carbon copy of David Cook...and he just doesn't measure up for me!
Karla, I agree with you on Kara. She almost seems like she is playing a role given to her which is ironic since she is always talking about authenticity. And if it's not a role, then I am even more confused about her behavior.
"Sweetest", I like the fact that we are both invested in someone because we are hoping they are able to and given the chance to fulfill their potential.
