Best Week of the Year

This was the best week of the year in terms of overall performances. I had trouble deciding who was best so I had to go back and re-watch my three favorite performances. Well, technically, not “re-watch” because what I like to do when I replay a performance is listen with my eyes closed so I can just focus on the singing. It is, as Randy reminds us, a singing competition. While the difference between my Top Three of the Night is small, I was clearer the second time around.

#1. Adam – superior from beginning to end. I do get that you either love him or you hate him but he demands and commands attention and is the most complete package ever as performer, singer and even arranger.

#2. Danny – his best week in a while and he needed it because, ironically, he was getting kind of boring just being good each week. He was incredible in the way he built the song up from a slowly paced beginning to a passionate ending - and he totally tore up the end of the song. He is so, so good but his problem is Adam - kind of like all the great basketball players who never won championships because they had to play against Michael Jordan.

#3. Allison – but this is a 3rd place with honor because she was fabulous, too. She just sings beyond her years and finally showed a broader stylistic range than we had previously seen. I could find no fault in her performance. It’s just that Danny and Adam were ever so slightly better. I, like Simon, do fear for her as I did last week. But I wish he hadn’t said that so emphatically, especially since he apparently likes her as a singer (just not as an ego) and since he knows how much his opinion matters in the voting.

I’m willing to allow that others may rank these three differently and I won’t think bad thoughts about you as long as these were your Top Three of the Night.
Which brings us to the back of the Idol Rat Pack:

Kris – sorry, Kris Lovin’ Ladies of Scottsbluff, it takes more than great eyes to impress this writer. I agreed with Simon here rather than the other gushing judges. Look, he sang fine. But it was a pretty forgettable performance unless you’re remembering how cute you think he is. Jazzy standards aren’t his style of song at all and I give him credit for doing as well as he did. He’s just not a good enough singer to go outside his narrow range of strengths.

Matt – was absolutely, positively dreadful. He was so pitchy and My Funny Valentine – a true classic among classic songs – was way bigger than his talent. I suggest he take lessons from Kris on how less = more; and from Danny on when and where to place your vocal runs; and he should have watched a video of Melinda Doolittle doing that song two years ago to realize he can’t sing it.

I hope Simon is wrong about Allison. Matt has deserved to go and deserves to go this week.

By the way, best Rat Packer album ever is Sinatra's Songs for Swinging Lovers.

Ok -

for the FIRST TIME THIS SEASON I actually rewound THREE songs tonight! I was thrilled with tonight - not just because I want to hang with Jamie Foxx but I liked EVERY SINGLE song - wellllll except Matt. I REALLY DON'T LIKE him and he's just a Justin-wanna- be ANNNNNNNNNNNNNND he sang one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE romantic songs - VERY BADLY. I yelled at Simon comparing him to Nat King Cole -

ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS!

Chris was cute, very cute but by the end I thought he was forgettable - I couldn't remember what he sang. He could be a Michael Buble - good background music

Allison - I think she can sing her ass off - but a little out of her league tonight

Matt - ok - but seriously a horrible pitchy performance of one of my favorite songs (& probably the one I will dance to IF I ever get married)

Danny - the BEST performance for me since his audition. AWESOME

Adam - again - over the top, completely the best vocals & performance of everyone.

Ray - I think Melinda Doolittle's version of My Funny Valentine was one of my all time Idol performances!

Truly the best night on American Idol ever by the most talented group of five left standing. Tough calls from now on, for sure.
My top three include Danny, Allison and Kris.

I would place Adam 4th. Randy and Kara were more right than not, to me, last evening about his performance. Their various expressions for "over-the-top" were mild to me. Yelling a note is not the same as singing the note and that is a consistent in his singing that he has not overcome by this point in the competition. His top notes are naught but screeches - like fingernails scraping a blackboard to my ear. Steve Perry - where are you as vocal coach for high note singing?

Not everyone (well, I will speak for myself here) revels in hubris and "full-of-himselfness" as Simon does with Adam and equates hubris with "really wanting to win" - huh? they ALL really want to win but people show it in different ways. For instance, Matt, who is such a good and talented singer, wants to win so badly that he has lost his equilibrium and self-confidence from trying to please the judges rather than the public.

I like Matt and feel sorry for him because he is really good but has not shown that since very early in the competition. I think he will go tonight. But then, somebody really good is going home each night from now on.

This was the BEST Idol show this season!
I love the standards (must be the Boomer half of me) and thought most of the performances were better than just good - Matt was the exception.

I also had difficultly choosing a favorite - It was between Adam and Danny. Adam is a performer who can sing (receipe for an Idol) and I think this was the perfect venue for Danny.

Allison and Kris were great - until I heard Danny and Adam - then they moved from great to good.

Time for Matt to go....

Quick thoughts (several days late):

Danny: Very, very good. His voice is amazing!
Adam: True performer. A bit over the top, sure, but that's him.

Allison: Eh. I've figured out another key thing that bothers me about her. Many of the words she sings are slaughtered - she drops the first consonant sound and replaces it with an "h" and just drops the last (or last several) consonant sounds. If I didn't know the words to the song she sang, I don't think I would be able to figure out 1/3 of them... and "Rat Pack" is not a genre that is appropriate for.

Kris: Good. I just don't have any strong feelings about him. He can be good but he's often forgettable.

Matt: Poor Matt. He clearly should have done a different song and used the piano.
