Ellen Degeneres the new Idol judge? How GREAT is that? This is so huge. I was seriously worried a bit about Paula leaving not so much because of Paula but because of the chemistry with the other judges and the audience. Whatever you thought of Paula’s wackiness, she was an essential element of the Idol chemistry. But – sheesh – Ellen is her own freaking chemistry! She loves music like the rest of us Idol geeks – I have long said that her dancing through the studio audience each day on her show is the best moment on TV – and c’mon, she will be funny on purpose!
The BIG question is, though, who has the power? Isn’t Ellen arguably a bigger star than Simon? She certainly is as big or bigger a personality. How will you not want to always hear what she has to say? How will Simon deal with that? And how much fun will she be with Ryan? Dude, this is so delicious!

{sigh} I certainly do not have the same case of EE as Ray (that's Ellen Enthusiasm, btw). All I can think of is why, why, why continue with the 4 judges format? Are the shows going to be longer or are we going to lose the meaningful commentary from the judges we care to hear from (primarily Simon, Randy, and maybe even Ellen in '10)?
With all said, I agree that Ellen is a good replacement for Paula. I just wish it could be a 3 judge panel.
I, too, totally opt for the original 3 judge concept. Having 4 diminished the enthusiasm for me. My experience from the beginning has been that only Simon is "truthful" and his has among the populace been the only one that has counted for the most part.
If they want a novel concept, they should have only Simon and have the public polled agree or disagree with Simon. Among my group of friends, Simon's opinion is the one awaited. The others are only take up seats.
